The health benefits of saunas.

TLoch Tay Saunahe health benefits of saunas have been long known, in fact back to the Bronze Age in Scotland. The earliest Scottish sauna dates back to the Bronze Age around 4000 BC to 1000 BC. Archaeologists uncover a 'sauna house' in Orkney one of the over thirty buildings. This includes a very rare Bronze Age building which experts believed could have been a sauna or steam house. “It’s also possible that the building could have been used as a sweat house or sauna, for a number of activities” which included basic healing and cleansing.

A typical sauna provides a dry heat with temperatures between 70° to 100° Celsius or 158° to 212° Fahrenheit.

Some of the possible health benefits of saunas

Regardless of how a sauna is heated, or its humidity level, the effects on the body are similar.

1. When a person sits in a sauna, their heart rate increases and blood vessels widen. This increases circulation, in a similar way to low to moderate exercise depending on the duration of sauna use.

2. Heart rate may increase to 100-150 beats a minute while using a sauna. This may bring some health benefits.

3. Easing pain - Increased circulation may help reduce muscle soreness, improve joint movement, and ease arthritis pain.

4. Reducing stress levels - As the heat in a sauna improves circulation, it may also promote relaxation. This can improve feelings of well-being.

5. Improving cardiovascular health - The reduction in stress levels when using a sauna may be linked to a lower risk of cardiovascular events.
